Zuidzijde is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. It lies south of the village of Den Bommel and has 180 inhabitants. The water tower is no longer in service but can still be seen from afar. Another landmark is farmhouse De Lage Werf, one of the oldest buildings on the island which dates back to around 1640, when it was originally build as a country house.
Goeree-Overflakkee is the southernmost delta island of the province of South Holland, Netherlands.
In the spring, the island is known for it's tulip-fields in the most amazing colours. Every year a lot of, mostly Japanese, tourist will visit the island just for the tulips.

Boats for hire on Noord Aasche Vliet River. Dutch landscape beauty in rural countryside setting, called Het Groene Hart, ( The Green Heart ) Zoeterwoude, South Holland, The Netherlands
This week my business activities took me to the Amsterdam area. Thursday I used lunch time between two appointments to visit the open air museum Zaandse Schans. The place is covered with windmills, historic buildings and tools of the last couple of centuries. The perfect weather made the stay a pure pleasure, I can highly recommend to visit the area.
Dutch winter nature is, a bit, cold, but it has no snow anymore.
Here is a scene with a river, trees, grass and all the nice stuff you city guys are missing so much.
So, one of my ideas for 2020 is to make a nature walk in winter, the only problem here is that there is absolutely no winter in the Netherlands.
At some days we could even think it is spring already. But, one of the nice things about that, it is not slippery and wet.
Enjoy the winter of 2020!
After three days in Amsterdam, we wanted to see the countryside of Holland. We found a nice excursion: Zannsee Schans, Volendam, the island of Marken, and a full afternoon at the fantastic Keukenhof park, which we wabsolutely wanted to see in the famous splendor of its tulips. I can already say that we were amazed.
Here we arrive at Zannsee Schanns, with a spectacular view. It's a small village with a lot of preserved vintage mills.

Trois moulins

For Jan and Tony :-)
Tulips are a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colors). They often have a different colored blotch at the base of the tepals (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Because of a degree of variability within the populations, and a long history of cultivation, classification has been complex and controversial. The tulip is a member of the lily family, Liliaceae, along with 14 other genera, where it is most closely related to Amana, Erythronium and Gagea in the tribe Lilieae. There are about 75 species, and these are divided among four subgenera. The name "tulip" is thought to be derived from a Persian word for turban, which it may have been thought to resemble by those who discovered it. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated (see map). In their natural state they are adapted to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates. Flowering in the spring, they become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back, emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring.
Originally growing wild in the valleys of the Tian Shan Mountains, tulips were cultivated in Constantinople as early as 1055. By the 15th century, tulips were among the most prized flowers; becoming the symbol of the Ottomans. While tulips had probably been cultivated in Persia from the tenth century, they did not come to the attention of the West until the sixteenth century, when Western diplomats to the Ottoman court observed and reported on them. They were rapidly introduced into Europe and became a frenzied commodity during Tulip mania. Tulips were frequently depicted in Dutch Golden Age paintings, and have become associated with the Netherlands, the major producer for world markets, ever since. In the seventeenth century Netherlands, during the time of the Tulip mania, an infection of tulip bulbs by the tulip breaking virus created variegated patterns in the tulip flowers that were much admired and valued. While truly broken tulips do not exist anymore, the closest available specimens today are part of the group known as the Rembrandts – so named because Rembrandt painted some of the most admired breaks of his time.

That special first day of spring on sunday, 20 march 2022.
There was still a strange and special sky , due to the Sahara sand hanging over our country. The last day of winter it was not so much visible, but on the first day of spring, it really was there. The sky was earlier yellow / red then usual and it looked a bit hazy and sounds were partially muted, like in a dense fog.
So spring really began special, let's hope for more of those moments this year.

Reflections in a dutch landscape. As reflections are my main interest in landscape scenes, I thought about roman numbering, difficult to make new titles for likewise scenes.
Typical Dutch-tulips and bicycles. ;)

* My final post to a trip we made to Amsterdam in the Spring of 2015 . Looking across the Amstel River and an interesting group of buildings catching the light . The trees are just beginning to come into leaf which gives a fresh look to the image in my opinion
The fact it has taken me almost four years to post these images from Netherlands shows how far behind I am with posting our travel shots . I still have shots of Norway from 2015 , four separate French trips, two road trips to the USA and Canada plus images from Italy and Spain . It's not a complaint, I know I have been fortunate to do a fair bit of travel . I could just post photographs from foreign trips but as I have said previously I enjoy mixing up images on my stream
THANKS FOR YOUR VISITING BUT CAN I ASK YOU NOT TO FAVE AN IMAGE WITHOUT ALSO MAKING A COMMENT. MANY THANKS KEITH. ANYONE MAKING MULTIPLE FAVES WITHOUT COMMENTS WILL SIMPLY BE BLOCKED
It's spring here in Washington found a few archives time to get back to the fields as we been hit hard with La Nina rain. We love those Tulips!

The benefit of going for a bike racing trip is that you can spot new places. So I did, in the area of Abcoude. I came back with my camera and made this spring image. Typical Dutch scene, maybe come back with fog :-)
Thank you so much for your visit and enjoy your Sunday
It's only the very end of February, but Spring seems already to be in full flower. Here's a Spring Lover - as the 'Erophila' signifies. In Dutch it's called 'Vroegeling' (= more or less: early born). It's a wee flower only a couple of mm across, but if you've an eye for it, you'll see it everwhere in the just greening fields and along footpaths.
A different experience in every season: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are exquisite, tranquil and inspiring all year round. Different footpaths, cycle routes and horse trails will lead you – with or without the aid of a forest ranger – through the beauty of one of the Netherlands' most unique areas of nature. There are no less than 80 fens in this stunning green expanse – pretty impressive, right?
Four seasons
Whether it’s the frozen fairy-tale fens of the winter, the dynamics of nature coming to life in spring, the musical croaking of frogs in the summer, or the explosion of colours in the autumn: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are a feast for all the senses.
Spot kingfishers, deer and roe deer, or bear witness to the wide variety of insects and water creatures in the fens and ditches. And after an exhilarating day of activity or sport, head to one of the large terraces to enjoy the peace and quiet and a tasty snack, lunch or dinner.Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens Groot Speijck Visitor Centre has a great terrace, as does Boshuis Venkraai. And both are ideal places to relax and soak up the surroundings.
